Will the 3G for the Vita be free? Or do we have to pay service for it? And where would we get service. Does that mean it also can be used as a phone?

3G for Vita is by AT&T. You have to pay a subscription. It's data, not phone.

Was there any mention of how much that service would cost? And does that mean 3G is required to play games online with other people on Vita?

Playing online multiplayer games can only be done with wifi. From what has been announced so far most people agree that 3G for the Vita doesn't have many features and isn't worth it. In the future they might have more features, but for now most people are just planning on getting the wifi model.

why in the world would people get the 3G if you can't use it to play online? why would you pay $15-30/month for another data plan and only be able to use it for mobile internet?
if that's the case, they should make the 3G model only $149 with a year contract with AT&T to sell that one.

And it really hurts that they announced Skype would be for the Vita as well. That really kills any reason to get 3G.
