I played the PSP a couple of times and they used the UMD will the vita have this or is it DL games? Also will you be able to watch downloaded movies like avi files on this system? I'm going on a big euro trip next year would be handy to have one of these for the plane hopefully the battery is long lasting!

Vita doesn't use discs, it uses game cards. Yes they will be available in real stores.

Vita can play MP4 (h.264) videos.

Battery life is around 3 hours for games. You can buy a separate external battery/charger that lasts 6 more hours.
