There's a great reason. They needed to make the money back somehow that they're losing by going 249.99.
That's a terrible reason for consumers, and a terrible reason for them. Don't believe me? Look at all the people that are outraged by it.

It pleases their shareholders. And since when has Sony been pro-consumer? They charged 600 bucks for the PS3 and also waited a week to tell everyone that all their private data was compromised. If you're looking for a consumer-friendly company you need to search elsewhere.
