I think I remember a Game Overthinker episode to this effect. Basically said that Sony would have a hard time dealing with an actual gaming company like Nintendo, or even another company with deeper pockets like microsoft.

Nope. Gamers were smart back then. Sony's consoles are still high quality and provide great support. Gamers in general are getting dumper by using alternatives.

I agreed. What's with all of these Ipad and smartphone game. We're losing a lot of hardcore gamer these day, People would rather play game on the go now then sitting at home and grind it out.

The problem with Sony was that they overpriced the PS3 and lost 3rd party exclusives.

They were pretty lucky with the PS1. If it wasn't for both Nintendo and Sega screwing up royally, Sony wouldn't have been able to establish any market presence (unless they decided to choose what Microsoft did, which was the equivalent of throwing billions of dollars into a bonfire large enough to draw attention).

The PS2 though wasn't luck, they just knew what they were doing back then. They were way too cocky with the PS3, and to an extent the PSP.

i would say luck played a huge factor. its obvious from how they handled the vita that they have no clue how to market a handheld.
