What could Sony have done to make sure that the Vita didn't do so terrible?

Lower the price with tablets and phones now available people will not pay more than $200 for a gaming only handheld simple as that Nintendo learned that Sony should also.

Allow SD cards to be used, not force users to format the card when changing users, not make the xmb menu touch only, not overprice their obsolete proprietary cards, allow backwards compatibility with psp games, give a battery supply of atleast 10 hours.
Other than the restrictions, the vita seems fine imo

1. Launch in the U.S. in Christmas 2011, not Japan
2. Ditch the rear touch pad and include internal memory instead
3. Use standard memory cards
4. Advertise
5. Use gorilla glass on the screen
6. Make sure games from popular franchises were actually good
7. Share costs with studios to guarantee that they had access to exclusives
8. Drop the price when it didn't sell
9. Offer PS+ for one year with every Vita purchase made over the holiday season
10. Make sure that every game available for the PSP is also available on the Vita.

I think the lack of backward compatibility (paying for titles again is not a solution) did more damage than most people think.

Make the cost of ownership cheaper.

^ That, make it cheap.
