In spite of how the PS3 is doing now, its ultimately a failure.
Sony didn't bank on the PS3 getting second place/tying with the Xbox 360. Sony banked on the PS3 to be the second coming of the PS2 and utterly crush the 360 and Wii with uber-hardware and a lifespan unseen before in the console industry. The PS3 was supposed to usher in the Blu-ray format as a HD-/DVD-killer format (which it did but then got killed by digital distribution). The PS3 was supposed toact as a home media center with remote functionality between other Sony products (Sony TVs, Sony music players, Sony Vaios, Sony PSP, etc).
