It does, it just takes a long time for it to refresh messages on its own. If you're expecting a message, just click the refresh button on the top right corner of the screen

Check your settings too
Specifically, you can make it play a sound or flash the home button when you have notifications and how often it refreshes --- PSN: Ahkiva

it clearly doesn't like you demon. ps vita are gentle creatures, they prefer to be treated nicely. so be nice and it might notify you for messages and etc.
