I was wondering if I bought a Japanese game online if it would work on my Australian Vita (vita is connected to an Australian PSN account)
Thanks.

It won't. Downloaded games only work when you are using the account that you used to download them.

If it's a physical game, yes. If it's a digital game, not unless you play it from the J-account which bought it. DLC is also tied to accounts.

As long as you have one memory card devoted to a jap account, then you will be able to go digitally.
