Persona 1 is stand alone

Persona 2 Innocent Sin PSP is a remake of the PS1 version. It's standalone with references to the first game

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment PS1 is a sequel to Innocent Sin. Kind of obvious since it has 2 in its name instead of being Persona 3

Persona 3 is standalone

Persona 4 is standalone with references to 3.

This, Eternal Punishment is a sequel to Innocent Sin (as FFX-2 is a sequel to FFX). Aside from that, the games do some references to the others in the series but are standalone, you aren't missing anything if you play P3 first for example.

how is the ps1 game a sequel to a game on the psp which came out years after the ps1s console life came to an end?

The psp version of innocent sin is a remake of the PS1 version which was never localized.

Gonna just jump in and say you should probably skip Persona 1 unless you're a big fan of the older Megami Tensei titles. The gameplay is very clunky and the battle system is just bad. If you play it first and don't have a tolerance for that sort of thing or some sort of nostalgia fueling you it could easily sour you on the series.

Innocent Sin is an enhanced port (not remake) of the PS1 version. IS was never release in the US until 2 years ago. Prior to that the only way to play it was through fan translation. So essentially IS is a new game for western fans.

Eternal Punishment is the sequel to IS. Think of it as part 2 of the over all P2 duology. We only got that version because Atlus for whatever reason we don't know decided to not localize the PSP version of EP. Back in 2000, EP was localize for us westerners. The PS1 version is essentially that same game.
