Playing the Ragnarok Demo.. Why do these Japanese games have such bad graphics

Like P4G and this game, the textures are terrible.

The vita is capable of much more

Japanese developers take less risks when producing games with "bad graphics" because it costs less and is faster to make these games. Japanese developers generally have smaller budgets than western ones.

Square Enix has been making losses and blaming it on games like Tomb Raider, Hitman Absolution and Sleeping Dogs selling less than expected when they all sold many times better than their ugly Japanese games like Bravely Default, Kingdom Hearts 3D or Theatrerhythm. Fancy graphics, a big budget and high production values is a huge risk if the games end up selling below expectations. Cheaply made games doesn't need to sell millions of copies.

Ragnarok Odyssey was also a launch window game (in Japan).

Good points..

Most core shooting games have to rely on better graphics since that's pretty much it for the gameplay.

Even more complex (relative to shooters) western games don't look very prett (DA, Skyrim Vanilla).

For some reason.. the topic reminds me of how FP Turn based RPG seem like the JPN plague (West has shooters) in games xD

Comparatively, yes. It's nowhere near Tomb Raider. I should perhaps have written "less advanced graphics" rather than "ugly". It wasn't an attack on Kingdom Hearts 3D which looks fine to me. I don't personally care about graphics.

I thought Ragnarok had pretty good visuals for a launch-window Vita game...
