I have both and I play my 3DS more often. It really all comes down to the types of games that are available or will be out in the near future that should dictate what console you should buy. So follow the games, not the console, since games are what makes the console worth buying. But if you have some extra cash to toss, might as well get both.

You won't be playing those PS2 classics unfortunately, but one thing you may consider is, are you getting a PS4? The new remote play hardware enabled mirroring system is pretty neat.

Take a look at the top scoring metacritic titles for each system and decide which you'd rather play.

That said, Soul Sacrifice > endless mario rehashes.

One large point to keep in mind is that digital purchases on Vita, while iffy due to proprietary memory cards, are licensed to your /account/. This means if you lose your Vita you still own the games, if you lose your 3DS, SOL if Nintendo won't bail you out.

VC titles on 3DS are only playable on 3DS, if you want to play the same NES game on your WiiU you'll have to buy it -again-. And they charge you upgrade fees to transfer them from Wii to WiiU..ugh. On Vita, any PS1 classics you own you can play on both Vita and PS3 for free, and there are lots of cross-buy titles where you get both versions of a PS3/Vita game.

Vita is region free: See Project Diva f. 3DS is region locked.

Soul Sacrifice is my second favorite game so far, but it's not for everybody. TC could very well be into "all that mario bull"
