Did Sony's greed with the memory cards doom the Vita?

The Memory for the PSP was over priced. Sony releases the Vita and uses a new memory card that is even more expensive than the one the PSP used. The fact that Sony raped me on the PSP memory cost is the main reason I never got a Vita.

I personally can't imagine that $30 extra would make that big of a difference if the Vita had been a compelling product outside it. The Vita wasn't.

having to spend twice as much on memory cards, even to the extent you might have to import them from Japan, is a pretty big deal

especially on a console with so much digital downloading avaiable

At launch there was virtually nothing available digitally outside retail games and the Vita sold like garbage. I have a hard time imaging it even being possible to fill an 8GB card until after the first summer.

Was it an issue? Of course, but not the main one.

I think a bigger issue was that the price for a Vita was ~$100 more than a 3DS and that smartphones had begun to make handhelds redundant. The main factor of the price difference was not the memory card.

If the Vita didn't have high priced memory cards, Sony would have just raised the price of the Vita. Keeping the Vita's price low and memory high, lowers the entry point for consumers who just want to play physical games.

What looks better?
$350 Vita
$250 Vita + $20 8gb or $250 Vita + $100 32gb

If it weren't for the memory cards allowing Vita's price to be low, it's sales would be lower than they already are.

Except for the fact that most physical Vita games still require a memory card to even boot, and that the Vita lacked even the smallest amount of on-board memory...

It didn't doom it, but it didn't help the situation either.
