A list of Tower 11 glitch workarounds:

My theory is it has something to do with Elena's affinity.

I didn't get any freezes UNTIL I got Elena to max affinity after my second incursion into tower 11.

Has anyone else gotten a freeze when Elena wasn't at max affinity?

Yeah. I've never been clear on exactly how the numbers work, but I was somewhere in the range of two pips down from the max. I was still high enough for the S Ending, though I think it was just barely.

My previous post notwithstanding, it's certainly possible that Elena's affinity plays a role. It might not be strictly a matter of how high it is, though; there are other ways it could be related.

I've stopped bothering with workarounds. I got my S-Rank ending on the first go, but I really didn't want to put up with that mess just for extra red-door treasure rooms which contain non-important items.

It's not worth going through this hassle again.

OK, I've been doing a lot of testing on my glitched save file. I don't have a cause, but I may have a reliable prophylaxis: as long as you're carrying meat that will spoil when you enter the Dawn or Dusk Towers, the game will not crash. This means that you have to enter from the Observatory while carrying meat (it won't spoil if you go directly from one tower to another, and so it can't protect you). It also means that you can't do this with meat that has already spoiled: it can't spoil again.

I ask other gamers to test this on their save files. Grab a piece of Beast Flesh from an early tower (I recommend Treetop), return to the Observatory, and then without giving it to Elena, go straight to either Dusk or Dawn. If this crashes your game, please let me know.

Since writing this, I found a way to make it fail. Get two pieces instead of one, feed one piece to Elena, and then carry the other piece into the tower. The meat should indeed spoil, but the game will still crash.

I can confirm that this doesn't work for me.

Later on in the game, it stopped working for me too, but when that happened, I could just walk into the towers without doing anything special and it worked just fine. Later still, it started working again.

I've got some more experimenting to do. I think I may have a lead, and if I'm right, it would even explain why the Beast Flesh trick works sometimes but not others.

I don't think it has anything to do with the meat. You just got lucky.

I don't know if it's just coincidence, but if I copy the save file to another slot, and then continue, I seem to be able to enter 11/12 just fine. I'm copying from slot 1 to slot 2, then continuing on slot 1 (not sure if the slots matter).

This also means that when I make a return trip to feed Elena flesh (good thing Pulsating Flesh is easy to get there), I make a save, select NOT to continue playing, and then copy the save file again.

I've got a save file where I tried it 40 times: 10 for Dusk/Meat, 10 for Dawn/Meat, 10 for Dusk/No-Meat, and 10 for Dawn/No-Meat. The no-meat attempts froze on all 20 attempts, and the attempts with meat worked on all 20 attempts. Nobody is that lucky.

But it worked for me with no meat. Just a single reset was all it took every time.

Interesting. I got a single reset to work once or twice, but not more than that.

Like I said, the conditions of the bug seem to change over time. I got a save file that was stable at a point where meat worked every time. It sounds like you got a save file that was stable at the point where a reset worked every time.

Do you still have that save file, by any chance? We should trade files and test more. I'm also starting to look into cracking the save files and analyzing them for common patterns, and another stable save file (especially one that's stable on a different fix condition) would be a valuable find.
