Got a few newb questions which someone could hopefully answer :)

1. How can I level up faster? I have played about 6 games of TDM, with 10 - 15 kills in each game, and I'm level 2!

2. How do vehicles work? Do I have to play a certain game mode to use them?

3. What are gadgets and how do they work?

4. How do I unlock attachments for my guns?

5. Does every Team Deathmatch game go up to 500 kills? Just endured a game which lasted about 30 minutes -_-

Before we start: Select on your controller is Spot. Spot is a teamwork tool that is easy to use and mark enemies on your HUD and Minimap. If you haven't tried it. You are missing out.

1. PTFO! Play the Freaking Objective! You can level up faster by doing team-oriented actions. Kills aren't everything in Battlefield. Revive, Repair, Resupply, Spot, Suppress, Heal and helping your friends will reward you in XP, awards and service stars. Awards and Service Stars are boosts of XP and show the other players your strength. Winning the game, being the Most Valuable Player and being in the Ace Squad will also grant you bonuses at the end of the match. There are also Weapon Service Stars but I will explain that in number 4.

2. Vehicles work like how you want to work them. You can change control schemes separately for Watercrafts, Aircrafts and Ground Vehicles in the options. You use "Circle" to enter a nearby vehicle. You can spawn into them if possible. Vehicles are mainly on Conquest and Rush game modes, but there are also Air Superiority and Tank Superiority in the Endgame and Armored Kill DLCs. I highly recommend that you practice in Empty Servers with the various vehicles in the game and find the control scheme that suits you.

3. Gadgets are infantry equipments. They are class specific equipments that augment the soldier's offensive and defensive capabilities. You can equip them in the soldier customization screen. In game, they are utilized with the D-Pad's left and right pads.

Refer to this for more details: http://battlefield.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Gadgets_of_Battlefield_3

4. Attachements can be unlocked by getting kills with the weapon. There is a bonus for every 100 Kills with a weapon and that's a Weapon Service Star. This is a 10,000 XP award. You can continuously get Service Stars if you can get the kills.

Aside from the Battlefield Wiki, good resources in Battlefield 3 are our FAQs section that is built with our members hard work. The Symthic website that contains detailed statistics and Game Science. Then there's also YouTube.

Short answer: No, but that's a rented server and the admin or owner changed the rule to be 500 kills.

Are you using the Server Browser yet? Quick Match should be avoided should you find yourself found in servers with arbitrary rules.

Server Browser 101:
- R3 to pull up the Server Browser Filter
- First you should choose your region
- Next mark the game mode and map that you want to play
- Look for official DICE and EA servers. They are the original without server admins and modified rules
- If you can't, select a rented servers. You can preview the rules and region of the server before joining in the preview screen. You can also favorite servers that satisfies you. Repeat until you find an adequate server.

Have fun and play wise!

I will also leave these few links explaining the various game modes found in the original game without downloaded contents.

Team Death Match is a good mode to become comfortable with the infantry aspect of Battlefield, but it's so little of the whole Battlefield experience. You might find the learning curve hard to overcome at first. The earlier that you become acquainted with Conquest and Rush. The more fun you will have. That's my opinion though.

I played around in online multiplayer for a little while. I kept getting sniped at and blinded by people who were using freakin flashlights all the damn time.

If you want to unlock certain assault rifles you have to play around as an Assault Soldier and kill people with the default assault rifle a certain number of times.

20 kills gets you some assault rifle.

also attachments are unlocked the same way I think too which is a pain in the arse
