So at one point in the story, William Miles gets ticked at Desmond and punches him. And I don't mean a friendly 'Boy, you so crazy' punch. I mean "I'MMA KILL YOU LET'S FIGHT" punch. And it's been driving me nuts: Desmond has all the skills of Altair, Ezio, and to a lesser extent at that point, Connor. HOW THE HELL DID HIS FATHER MANAGE TO BLINDSIDE HIM?! What was the point of all that training, all the reliving of Ezio if DESMOND CAN'T BLOCK OR DODGE ONE PUNCH FROM AN OLD MAN?!

Anyone have any theories or excuses for this? Preferably better than "Desmond wasn't expecting it." or "Desmond didn't want to hurt him."?

Uh, William Miles is the Mentor of the whole Assassin Order. How's that for an excuse?

Desmond also JUST SAID in a conversation before that, that if his dad hit him he would hit back. So much for that, huh?

Desmond has the skills, knowledge, and experience of TWO of those. Plus, William wasn't attacking from the shadows or sneaking stealthily with a hidden blade. He was standing right in front of him and threw a haymaker.

Yeah but Desmond says "if you punch me AGAIN..."
I think this conversation was meant to be heard after that scene...

I thought that conversation referred to William hitting Desmond as a child, personally.

He actually says that afterwards, I believe. Unless Bill punches him again later on. If so, lol.

That really doesn't make that big a difference. Especially if they keep making exponential growth. I.E., Ezio was more lethal than Altair, Connor more brutal than the rest.

If they kept increasing in skill that way, William has skill above and beyond Desmond. Desmond just has the bloodline necessary for the Apple and the skill of two -older- Mentors, of whom have been shown to continue increasing in skill with each generation.

People thowing temper tantrums don't tend to see straight either.

Not to mention he was probably groggy from having Connor's childhood shoved down his throat.

If you go out of the animus manually during any previous sequence and start talking to William he will say this. I also thought that he's talking about his past/childhood fact that I didn't know about, but after the punching scene it suddenly made sense:)
