This is the same **** as the change of 2000 all over again, so allow me to explain
In the long count calendar, you have many subdivisions for the periods of time. Kin, winal, tun, ka'tun, b'ak'tun. Kin is a day. 1 winal is 20 kin. 1 tun is 18 winal. 1 ka'tun is 20 tun. 1 b'ak'tun is 20 ka'tun. In other words, 1 b'ak'tun is 144,000 days, or 394 years.
What's happening is that the 13th b'ak'tun is ending and the 14th b'ak'tun is starting. People are only thinking that it's the "end of the world" or something like that because it's from a civilization they don't know about and because it represents a "change of cycle" for them, which people apparently take as the end of the world.
