Just wow...

Basically, the name didn't originate in AC, and I could absolutely see an astronomer or something naming his kid this way as well. Nothing weird IMO.
By the way, will it be pronounced like in the games, or is their another way to pronounce it in english that you want to settle for?

Okay, from now on I'll blacklist anyone who calls their character a "toon" at first sight, without exceptions.

A guy a know who speaks Arabic told me the L is basically silent, so it's supposed to be pronounced like "Ah-tie-ear."

Np, but like the other guy said he can always fall back on Al for short and if his middle name is cool enough for him people might call him that.

If you both are REALLY on the fence about it you could make Altair his middle name. I am black and my middle is "RaShad" which is common in black naming but is of Arabic origin that means "Good Judgment".

Rules when naming kids:

1. Do not name them after a videogame character
2. Do not name them like a moronic celebrity couple would
3. Do not name them a normal name but then decide to phonically spell out their name to make it seem "different"
4. Do not randomly make something up by combining two names

And send him to school with a clown nose and a red wig so kids will laugh with him, not at him.

No, NO, NO!!!

Naming your kid after a a ficitious character is about as good an idea as beyonce naming her kid ivy blue...

He will grow up with people butchering the pronounciation among other things (I have people misspelling my name all the time in addition to that issue).... Or purposefully trying to make fun of it...

If this is a troll topic, you won, if its serious, then please for your child's sanity's sake, don't do it...

my 2 cents.

Yes, this is a signature.

Here, I dunno why I am doing all this but this should help you decide, lists most pros and cons of the name along with surveys of people who have named their kids Altair or were named by their parents.

http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/suitability_of_Altair.html

In the end it is you and your wife's call and you should never listen to the opinions of people on a message board ESPECIALLY Gfaqs. :P
