Sure, I'd play it. But that would be because I love Assassin's Creed, not because I particularly want a game set in Japan.

This. i don't really want an assassins creed in Japan, because it has been totally over done. but i would still play it.

Well as overdone as it may be. Assassin's Creed does a good job with making accurate portrayals of past cities. And a setting as that has a good chance of amazing scenery porn as the Frontier in this.

If they were to go for a game set in "The Orient" I'd much rather have a game set in India or China.
