Because Sonic 4 (Episode 1) had many legitimate problems.

The Spin Dash was much slower than it should be, and you even lost speed when rolling downhill (unlike previous games, in which you would gain a substantial amount of speed).

In addition to that, you automatically uncurled when you hit a ramp, leaving you open to attack unless you could see the enemy and react to it with the Homing Attack in a split second, which, in a game that should be based on speed and momentum, is a bad element to force.

The run animation was really goofy. Okay, yeah, that's a matter of opinion, but still, it looked stupid.

The levels were very uninspired. They were basically Green Hill, Casino Night, Labyrinth, and Metropolis zones with crappy new gimmicks.

The zones' gimmicks were very forced. There are, what? Four or five sections where you have to roll on a ball, and many of those come literally one right after another. And the dark caves of the Lost Labyrinth zone were a terrible idea. Why would you intentionally add an element that slows the player down, and punishes them for attempting to go fast? It's like they learned nothing from Big the Cat.

Everything just felt very uninspired. You could say that a couple of the later zones in Episode 2 lacked inspiration, but they added a lot to those zones that were already great, and it felt more like an upgrade than a rehash. And like I said, those zones were great to begin with. You never hear people clamoring over Casino Night, and Labyrinth is one of the most despised levels in all of Classic Sonic history. Their inclusion is just dumbfounding.

Why do people knock Sonic 4? Because simply put, it is a sequel to Sonic 3 & Knuckles--the game that's arguably the pinnacle of the franchise--and it fails to live up to its predecessor. Big-time.

This video puts it perfectly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgRtv3kx9YU

Sonic games are now judged by how much they don't suck compared to previous titles, which is just all wrong. Sonic 4 should by all means be superior, if not AT LEAST on par with Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It is not.

I dont hate it, but what bothers me is that the game only has 4 zones. Cmon, its 2012 we should have 7! Also, wheres the originallity? Syvania is a Aqua ruin/ Marble zone rehash.

So much this. It's all about being so in love with the originals that nothing else could possibly compare. They won't allow themselves to enjoy a Sonic game that didn't come out when they were kids. Physics Shmysics the game is still quite playable even if it doesn't match the Genesis exactly.

This is such a lie. I played episode 2 and was bored out of my mind in many areas of the game, but I wanted to love it. I'm LOOKING for a game in the series to surpass Sonic 2 and/or 3&Knuckles, but it's just so obvious to me that neither Sonic 4 episode is as good as them, not even close. It isn't nostalgia, it's knowing what quality is. Sonic 1 hasn't aged the best, I'll fully admit that. Sonic Generations is better than the original Sonic even and is a very fun game, but Sonic 4: Episode 2 here just reeks to me compared to the better Sonic games out there. Not bad, but completely average.

Also, the music. I've never played a Sonic game with "bad" music. Maybe okay music, but bad? Never. Not until this game, anyway. You just don't have a bad soundtrack in a Sonic game. You just don't. I would trade the little quality Episode 2 actually has for a good soundtrack. At least it would give me some kind of enjoyable incentive to keep playing the game so I can listen to everything.

I have to agree. While I don't "hate" either games, they could have been much better than this. Especially episode 1. The physics in that game were pretty much as foxhole described. It's not horrible but it should have been better.

People hate Sonic 4 Episode 1 because it was actually bad.

E1 is disliked for unfaithful physics and bad music.

E2 is disliked because people are butthurt and can't accept that they listened to your damn complaints and did something about it.
If it can't run well on PC, then it wasn't worth playing.
I'm just saying what I know you're thinking.
