Each idol gives a discount in every store, these discounts do not stack.

Gold (Escort Duty): 30% discount
Silver(Put an Eye Out): 20%
Bronze: 10%

Is it actually in the house or on the platform against the side of the house?

The idols are used in the quests 'Idol Worship' where certain shopkeepers [two of them give you the same quest separately] will ask you to obtain an idol to bolster their inventory. The quests unlock after meeting the Duke for the first time.

The idol forgeries give shop discounts. Bronze giving the lowest, gold the highest. You just have to keep them in your active party's inventory [usually stick them on your main pawn] and the discount is active.
Note that the game will always take the discount from the highest tier, and the discount will not stack - if you're carrying both a gold and silver forgery, you only get the gold discount. Multiple idol forgeries do NOT stack, including with the Wyrm Hunt License discount.

Where to get them -

Gold Idol - from the quest 'Escort Duty' which requires you to escort Fournival's daughter Symone around Gran Soren. In itself it's a pretty tricky quest - need to make sure you stay near her at all times, don't bump into her, make sure she wins the race. You can access the quest pretty early on, even before you meet the Duke. You just need to have done Fournival's 'Land of Opportunity' quest, and attempted 'Chasing Shadows'. Heard there might be other quests that can trigger it, but not sure - that was the earliest I did it. Note that if you're further on in the game and have the trial quest, you need to make sure you prove Fournival innocent or you can't get the escort quest.

Silver Idol - from the quest 'Put the Eye Out' from a noticeboard. Possibly the Alehouse one but don't really remember. Simple enough quest.

Bronze Idol - one from the witch's house in the forest. Read there was another one but don't know where.

For the Idol Worship quests - DO NOT give forgeries. They don't work like the originals. In fact giving a Bronze Idol is better than giving a Gold Idol Forgery. Also make sure you don't just give the merchants idols without the quest - you're wasting an idol basically.

Last but not least where to find Black Cat - in Gran Soren at night time, there's a shop window that opens on the lower-right corner of the map, opposite an empty house [which turns into another shop during the day later on]. It's to the right of where 'Venery' is marked when you open the map, and down from where 'Aqueduct' is marked.Basically in that one little alley on the lower-right diagonal wall of Gran Soren

Anyway hope that helps

edit : discounts don't stack. sorry about that.

Question though..

When I found a Bronze Idol.. uhm.. the shopkeeper guy said: 'WOW, can I have that!' .. .. Sure.. And he got many new goods.

When I found the second Bronze Idol.. the uhm.. shopkeeper didn't respond to it like he did before.. Eventually I happened to bump into Madeleine's shop and she wanted a statue as well.. So I have it to her, lol.. And she has many new goods.

But now I also have a Silver Idol and a Golden Idol.. And I read that they wanted those as well but it's not triggering.. Both have a pinkish glow but are not reacting to the idols.

Can you only give ONE idol to each person per playthrough (Meaning that if you gave Bronze you are screwed) or do I just need to wait and progress through the main story for them to ask for those idols (I just finishing the Griffin hunt)
