The art was like the best part of the first game... and now seeing bad 3D graphics in the cutscenes is quite annoying. Is there any way at all to get the 2D art? --- http://raptr.com/badge/RyanSaotome/fs_lastplayed.png http://myanimelist.net/signature/RyanSaotome.png

There will be some scenes that are in 2D similar to the first game, but they are very few in number.
But yea, I hear you; the visual novel style of the first one was probably my favorite thing in the first game as well. --- PSN: LostRequiem1

Hmm, if I had to guess..
Neptunia was created for a very niche audience. It was easy going, all-girl cast in a VN style with RPG elements inserted into it. If you go through the reviews for the first game, most of the negative reviews just seem not to understand, or care, about that and judged it as a regular game. Since Neptunia sold a good deal better than initially projected, it got more exposure than one would suspect.
My guess is that, after seeing the success of this game, they want to move it closer to what a usual JRPG would be like so it would appeal to a bigger audience. Hence, the 3d models, the revamped world map/dungeon, more flexible battle system, giant robots, and so forth.
That's not to say that it ended up up to par with other games in terms of 3-D graphics. --- http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l7/Jayjs20/Neptunia/M4H00716-new.gif

Because int eh first game the dialog was boring and unfunny and moved as slow as tar. This game is a bit better but still not what I woudl call good. But hey! things are moving! That makes everything better. --- Sliced bread is over hyped. I give it a 5. ~~Xerain

Just experimenting I guess. I miss the 2D portraits, hopefully they bring them back. --- ASUS G73JH-RBBX05 | 8GB DDR3-1333 | i7-720QM | ATI HD 5870M | 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD CP: Mass Effect (PC), Battlefield 3 (PS3), Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 (PS3)

While the control of the 3D models adds an interesting dynamic to the scenes, I too prefer the 2D. Specifically the Motion Portrait style the first game used. I think good 2D is better than ugly 3D, but good 3D is better than good 2D.
As for why they did it? Since the game uses both it smells like experimentation and time/money problems to me. If all the Chirper events were 2D, I'd say they had the main story evens in 3D to poke fun at the changing and "improving" of the industry. But since only some Chirper events are 2D, I'd wager it's a less well-planned reason. --- Supermicro X8DTU-6TF+-B, Intel Xeon 4C X5672 3.20GHZ/1333MHZ/12MB, Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR3-1866 Quad Channel, 6x1TB 15000RPM HDD, Voodoo Banshee
Looks like they got rid of the 3D models in the next game, at least. It seems I'm not the only one who didn't like them --- http://raptr.com/badge/RyanSaotome/fs_lastplayed.png http://myanimelist.net/signature/RyanSaotome.png

I loved the old style and was very sorry to see them change it. I wish more games would use it, and I look very much forward to its appearance in Agarest War 2. Part of it I think comes from the fact that Katsuyuki Hirano is probably tied with Takeuchi as my favorite character designer in the entire industry. My best friend is on the other side of the fence: He thought the way that the characters moved in scenes creeped him out and looked too inhuman.
Honestly, the fact that they changed it was annoying enough, but I wouldn't have minded as much if the actual in-game graphics weren't of noticeably lower resolution in general than the first game. All those jaggies EVERY cutscene. Ugh. I really hope they revert back to the old way for Neptunia V. --- PSN ID: Berselius XBOX LIVE ID: HarvestrOfSouls

Pretty much this for me. I'm fine if they keep the breathing and blinking, but less swaying/head bobbing please. --- You lack the mustache for full comprehension. (Super Paper Mario)
