Are Revelations and Brotherhood essential to the main story?

I just started the series about a week ago and have burned through AC and I'am nearing the end of AC2. I really enjoy the gameplay and environment but once the initial wow factors fade, I find that it is the story that drives me to finish each game.

So my question is, do these two games add anything to the main story, or do they just serve as filler content(Kingdom Hearts comes to mind) until AC3 is out?

They're pretty important, especially to the present day/Desmond's story. They're actual continuations of the storyline rather than backstory spinoffs like those Kingdom Hearts games.
