"this housing is not suitable" ?

as opposed to
"not valid housing"

can anyone tell me the difference between the phrases?

"Not valid housing" means it is not a house at all.

"This housing is not suitable" means it is a house, but it's not acceptable living quarters. Usually, this means that it is too small or lacks walls.

I have a table and chair,
it's bigger than the room the Guide actually accepted,
and it looks like I have all wooden walls.
any other possibilities?
I got to magma gear in 1.0.5, so I'm only getting back on the horse.

I sometimes made a normal room and it said it was not suitable. I had to move the furniture one space forward and all of a sudden it was a room now.

put in a workbench in, tables no longer count as flat surfaces any more?

That's enough light, but try making it a bit higher. It should be six blocks high and enough but however making it higher is all I can think of.
