HDMI on the Wii looks no better than Component. The only difference is that HDMI is an analog signal converted to digital, while Component is just an analog signal. --- Xbox LiVE Gamertag: Snaffle J Bean America's disgruntled, short, fat gamer since 1996 |

1080p is HD. HD is only the output resolution, it is NOT a representation of the quality fo the game's art assets. Playing Quake at 1920x1080 resolution is just as much HD as playing Crysis 2 at 1920x1080 is. However even if the Wii could upscale games to HD, it would make little difference: the native rendering resolution would be the same.
You saw 1080p pictures of Brawl that were taken from a PC emulator that can render the game in a higher resolution than the base system can, but that only works BECAUSE it's emulation. The Wii U will almost certainly be using Wii hardware to maximize compatibility, so the games will be completely identical to the Wii from a rendering standpoint: they will not be in a higher resolution or have antialiasing or any of the other features that emulators allow for. You won't notice any real difference if you're already using component cables on the Wii and have it set to 480p.
And just for random's sake, here's a picture of Super Mario Galaxy at 1080p, enjoy:

Because the Wii U will almost certainly not be emulating the Wii. Nintendo especially has never used emulation for backwards compatibility, because this can cause a number of technical and compatibility issues, and it's far easier to just throw the hardware in and get perfectly working compatibility than design a complex emulation platform. The only thing they emulate are specific individual releases that go their their own QA period, such as the Zelda bonus discs for the Gamecube or the Wii's Virtual console games.
Also the Xbox 360 still only runs games at their native resolution (almost always 480p), although with antialiasing. It just upsamples them to whatever your output display is. --- "Walking tanks must exist somewhere for there to be such attention to detail like this in mech sim." - IGN Steel Battalion review |
