I know it probably won't be able to, but I would LOVE to play Super Mario Galaxy 2 in 1080p on my 50" plasma.

Reggie said in the interview with GT that it won't upscale Wii games.

It seems like reggie misunderstood, i meant hd display not graphics, ive seen 1080 pictures of brawl. why cant wii u do this?

It's video memory is too small (3 Megabytes). The hardware determines the size of the image, not the games, and the Wii is locked into a 640x480 display, though some say it goes around 854x480 in widescreen. The HD Brawl you're no doubt referring to was an emulator on a high-end PC, which obviously has both the graphical power and the monitor resoution to draw the game at HD resolutions.

I have to buy an adapter to output hdmi?

There are both Component-to-HDMI converter boxes and Wii-native HDMI cables, both third party of course. Neither of them appear to resize the 640x480 image the Wii puts outs, because it's actually the console, not the game, that's the problem, but being output in an HDMI signal seems to help things look a little better. I don't actually own one myself, so I'm plugging something I don't have, but I like the concept at least.

The 360 does emulate the original Xbox at 1080 with AA tough... why not the Wii U ?

Because the Wii U will almost certainly not be emulating the Wii. Nintendo especially has never used emulation for backwards compatibility, because this can cause a number of technical and compatibility issues, and it's far easier to just throw the hardware in and get perfectly working compatibility than design a complex emulation platform. The only thing they emulate are specific individual releases that go their their own QA period, such as the Zelda bonus discs for the Gamecube or the Wii's Virtual console games.

Also the Xbox 360 still only runs games at their native resolution (almost always 480p), although with antialiasing. It just upsamples them to whatever your output display is.

This. Emulation-reliance is the reason why Xbox 360 BC only covers half the library and is relatively bug-ridden, and why the PS3 had to drop PS2 compatibility- Sony either had to stack the PS2 emotion engine on top of the PS3 tech, or emulate it to similar effects to the Xbox games.
