In this day in age most people do. If you couldn't get a BluRay/PS3 in this amount of time, then why by the WiiU?
While it is a nice feature, it's not a console requirement.

“Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities,” president Satoru Iwata told investors. “The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.”
Seems fair to me.

They'd be singing of the death of the PS3/360 because the Wii U's superiority by being able to do what the PS3/360s can do and have better graphics and the Wii U controller. Just like how graphics are a great thing now that the WIi U is suppose to be better.
Just admit it guys, you all wouldn't mind if the Wii U had these features even if you already have hardware capable of playing DVD/BRs. There's nothing wrong with having those features. There are still people that don't have BR players. This could have just been an option for them.

No. Between this information release and the release of Wii U, one should own or can buy a Blu Ray player. Which would cost less than a Wii U WITHOUT Blu Ray.
