Will the Wii U fail for the same reason as the 3DS?

The 3DS looks like just another redesign to the casuals, the Wii U looks exactly the same as the Wii except with rounded edges.

Nintendo needs to rethink its strategy.

Redesign for...the casuals? I lol'd.

The Wii U has the potential to fail like the 3DS with its launch. Any system is capable of that.
However, in recent light of the 3DS, I think Nintendo's finally starting to get serious. They have a year(+) to make it count.

So the answer is maybe.

TC, do you realize the 3DS sold over 4 million at its original price in roughly 3 months?

Iwata talked about the 3DS not meeting project sales which was around 10 million which was very optimistic to believe that would happen in 3 months, but he did not clarify in the article if that amount was for the year or for that 3 month period.

The DS had more quick, fun, casual games in comparison to its competitor, and a few people in the business believe that this was the reason the PSP did not do as well because people on a portable expect portable games not the portable interpretation of a "core" console game.

The 3DS might just succeed because Nintendo knows how to sell portables and what games do well on them. If you have doubt in that then go look at the software sales of the DS and the competition and tell me how well certain games did as opposed to other games.

The U is a new thing for most people who got introduced to the gaming world when the PS3 and 360 were birthed. Being a Nintendo fan, I cannot even predict what is going to happen in the next few years; the U just might flop or blow the other consoles out of the water.

There are plenty of people who grew up with Nintendo and love their iconic figures, and now there is a whole new generation of kids growing up in Wii houses because it was a family friendly console which may keep Nintendo in the family with the U.

Nevertheless, the competition that has had lack luster sales these last years have adopted motion controls and have been getting family games and shovelware which has made their systems friendlier for family. The Kinect has seen some real positive growths while their have been announcements that future games on the PS3 are cutting back on being Move oriented. The original focus of these consoles is starting to get blurred right when a new console is coming out offering the best of both worlds but what it delivers is unclear as of yet.

The U will be coming into a world where the "core" consoles have adopted "gimmick" motion controls to be competitive in a new market while the new console will have its install base with the potential of familiar control schemes on top of a popular concept, touchscreen.

Another market being left out here is the generation of kids that grew up with touchscreen/tilt based controls that the new console represents. If the U hits home with appeal to this broadening market including some form of digital store then a whole new set of figures need to be calculated on top of casual and core markets.

We honestly cannot say what will happen, flop or fail the U will come in 2012.

I didn't realize that selling over a million units a month since launch was "failing."

Does that mean Sony - that barely gets a half a million units a month - is DOA?

I think in America, it will be another fail due to no games and people not wanting to waste their money on something with no games. All the games that have been announced for it seem to be ports and rehashes.

The $249 price tag really hurt the 3DS. Nintendo obviously saw this or else they wouldn't be slashing the price to $169 only 4 months after launch. I'm very excited to own a Wii U and think it'll be a success as long as they don't make the same silly mistake of over pricing it like they did the 3DS.

I hope they don't overprice it, either, but - again - over a million units a month isn't failure.

Keep in mind that it's being compared to DS sales, which is an unfair comparison since the DS debuted at holiday season.
