It's a lot like the evolution of the phone. From a single line of numbers, to multiple lines, to color and pictures, and then higher resolutions and touchscreens.
Good point, though I spose the one reason why not to connect them is that there's so many evolutionary steps in between required (unlike the slower, multistep phone analogy you used), that it's hard to say that it's definitely a direct evolutionary successor. By which I mean, one could argue, it has dual analog and buttons, etc., but isn't directly connected to any controllers as such. In a way, it's both a 'new beginning', and an amalgamation of many (most?) controllers to date from all companies.
