In response to why third party developers want to support MS/Sony despite the higher cost is because of marketing. Most of the good third party games are intended primarily for teenagers/young adults and "hardcore" gamers, and that demographic is best represented by MS/Sony. This isn't macroeconomic theory, but simple common sense. More money invested = higher returns on those investments.

This doesn't bother me. I only buy Nintendo's systems for the first party games anyway.
