Emerald_Melios posted...But seeing the current crop of Western makers making the same mistake, it goes back to the same question: why are they so obsessed with trying to emulate live action cinema or television?
Mostt of it was to make gaming "grow up" and "evolve" and make it into an art form.
You don't see anyone trying to turn baseball into an artform or asking if sports are art.
Sports fans aren't treated like nerdy little rejects, so there is no movement to change the fundamentals of sports. Surprised? No one is claiming baseball, football, etc. are "more of the same" or asking "where are the new sports???"
Videogame fans aren't so lucky, so there is desperation to change it until society begins thinking videogames are cool and manly and respected. This is also why modern games have a lot of older, overly masculine male characters.
If you had told me back then that my peers would grow up into the messes they are today, I never would have believed it. I was there, I know how parents or other adults would look down on videogames and us for loving it so much. I never really cared what they thought. It was something I liked and no one was going to pressure me to stop liking it. That's the reaction these guys should have had. Gaming would be better today if they didn't all evolve into the worst of both worlds a.k.a. "manchildren".
All the potential, all the ideas I saw on the horizon where abandoned to chase after fetishes, respect, prestige, egos, and other disturbing things that shall not be named.
You know that gif of Reggie saying "what's wrong with you?" Yeah. What's wrong with
you?
