It's always just an excuse for gameplay. And don't bring up Zelda as a counterexample considering how messed up the continuity of those games are.
Vampire Rain is the best game ever.

It's true, Nintendo seems to think stories in games aren't worth doing. Which is kind of stupid.

Whilst I love a good story in a game.
I'm actually all right with the lack of story in Nintendo games. I've played some of the series since so long that I actually started to fill in the blanks by myself. But that might be just me. *shudder*
