You have to press a red, blue, or green button.

Red destroys all zombies, but at the same time destroys all survivors except for children.
Blue controls all the zombies.
Green merges zombies and survivors together.

can't be you play as different no name characters when you die. My guess is

That would make even more sense. You play as a new zombie each time.
