"One downside is that the drive will be formatted for Wii U when setup, and you won't be able to switch it back and forth with other devices, such as PCs. That makes sense from Nintendo's perspective, in terms of maintaining security and countering a potential back-door for hackers, but will likely mean that you'll need to have a hard drive exclusively for your Wii U."

So say goodbye to thinking you can use your 2TB Hard Drive for your ps3, pc and plug it into the wii u or BACKING UP wii u games on your pc.

The Hard Drive is ONLY formatted for the Wii U and if you plug it into your pc, ps3 or anything else the DATA WILL BE ERASED and you CANNOT ACCESS your data unless you format it first.

Talk about lame.
I wanted to put music, videos, pictures and use my Hard Drive for my pc and ps3 but now I have to buy 1 only to be used for the Wii U!!!

Nintendo lets you do it on the 3DS why not on the wii u???

Honestly it makes some sense, and I'm pretty sure the differe OS for the PS3 and it's games could screw with the HDD? Or something. But who knows maybe there will be options in the future for music and such things.

Looks like I will be getting a 64gb usb drive to start, not like I won't have a use for it later.

My 1.5TB HDD I use for my Macbook is empty except for some time capsule saves, the 250GB HDD I was gonna use for my 32GB Wii U has stuff I can easily transfer over to the TB one while in class tonight. Good find though, this along with the fact that you have to use a double powered HDD (HDD with 2 usb cords) is something Nintendo should have said 2 months ago.

You know you can most likely partition the hard dive and that part will be be formatted by the Wii U

Sadly, yes. My TB one has 2, but I'm not giving that up. Most of the 1 USB ones are new, because most NEW PC's/Macbooks don't require 2 usb because USB 2.0 and definitely 3.0 can power stuff more efficiently. Especially anything made to work with Windows 8.
