Yup, they're powered through the USB cable. I have a 250GB from ~3 years ago that is powered straight from USB.

Just make 2 partitions, format one in ext4 (linux format), not even windows recognizes that format (without additional software), then format the partition the Wii U recognizes in Wii U format
afterwards reformat the linux partition to ntfs, no big deal

Btw, I highly doubt the Wii U will only let you format the complete hard drive, I'm pretty sure they will let you choose how much of the drive to format into the Wii-U format.

1. Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 are EXACTLY the same way.

2. IF you really TRULY are so cheap you would use a hard drive universally among everything. Then learn how to create "separate" partitions and you will be fine to use just one hard drive for all your devices.

Garfield....something we can finally agree on.

its not hard to make more than one partition on an external drive.

This is what Gamefaqs NEEDS to be, a place to pass along information to fellow gamers. I hate it when companies don't let the consumer know about critical things like this. But sadly this topic is about to become pushed by topics of "I sold my Wii U for 6,999 whatever dollar function". Sad...

yep, im angry, i can't afford a new hard drive atm, i had 1tb external hard drive that has 400gb free that i could have used but i can't now because that hard drive has important documents and all sorts of backup data on it that i don't want nintendo to erase, buying a wii u is expensive as it is plus i have other stuff to buy like upgrading parts for my pc.

anyways it dosn't matter i won't be buying digital content on the eshop anyway so i don't need the extra space, my only concern is that i can't backup my saves to a sd card, i shouldn't have to be forced to use a external hard drive to do a simple task its just adding up more to the whole total which is money i can't afford to spend right now.

Ps3 and 360 dont do this

So its one up to nintendo for inventing their own format which cant be read by anything else

Infact its the first time ive seen it done by anything, even on pc.

i have a 16gb usb flash drive that has ps3 saves and photos on there, i don't want that getting errased, do i? plus i can't afford to get a extra hard drive or usb flash drive atm so i am stuck using the internal 32gb in the meantime, this really does suck.
