Can someone clarify the cause for the bricking?

Does the WiiU get bricked if the power is cut or if the internet connection is lost while updating or both?

I've seen 3-5 topics about power cut and one about internet cut.
So both in theory.

Ugh that's awful. I'm getting mine Tuesday and I had no real worries about my power going out but sometimes by internet goes in and out. Now I'm getting really nervous.

I would say both, but it all depends on how Nintendo setup their hardware. Usually the smart way to this would be to DOWNLOAD the firmware\bios to the memory\ built in flash memory- then apply the update AFTER it has downloaded.....not during the download. Then there should be a script to delete the bios\firmware from the built in flash memory automatically. Nintendo online services aren't top notch at all so the way they decided to go about updated is crazy as hell.

Well if you are updating the firmware\bios for any device it's crucial that you do this on a sunny day. Power lost will always equal a bricked device unless there is a reset or a backup of the firmware\bios Especially when the update is taking up to an hour or more to download. I can't say a lost internet connection would cause it, but I'm sure it would. I say this because I've lost connection on my Wii while upgrading the firmware, but never suffered a "bricked console". Probably because the firmware had a fall back. Now losing power is always bad and you cannot reverse that. Only Nintendo can fix this issue unless they "give us the secret code" then Iwata will allow us to drop the bombs.

I'm not sure why Nintendo thought it would be a good idea to release a huge update on the DAY ONE release. That update is way to big.

Both. The previous firmware gets replaced with the new one, and if the process is interrupted you're left with nothing, or something like that.

I'm confused as to why losing internet would cause a problem. On other systems I own (PS3) if my internet dies while its updating I remember the update just stopping until the internet picks up again. Not 100% sure on that but I think that's what happens. This update is making me way too nervous.

Hopefully not everybody and their mothers are trying to update their console then so you will get it downloaded faster.

That is exactly what I'm hoping. I'm hoping part of the reason for such a long download is that everyone is doing it today. Maybe by Tuesday it'll be faster.

Nintendo being cheap with the hardware plays a role in this.

because Iwata turned Nintendo from a company that produces quality to a company that cuts corners and releases quick cash in sequels (see: everything Mario since SMG2) and dumbed down versions of formerly quality series (Fire Emblem, Paper Mario, Metroid, etc.)
