Oh God... Is Wii U Chat up? I want to prank my sister's friends.

So my sister's being a pain as usual and hogging the living room with her loud friends, and I considered bringing the gamepad up to my room and playing some NSMBU. (Fortunately, the gamepad works from there, although the linoleum tiling of the upstairs bathroom apparently prevents me from playing from there.)

Then I realized that I can turn on the TV from here. And there's a video chat program. I could remotely turn on the TV and have someone else on the screen, staring at them, possibly talking to them. Oh god, I want to do this.

The other person shows up on the TV screen, right? Somebody add me to the friends list and let's do it!

how exactly do you plan on turning on the tv?

Won't reach, you can't change the channel unless pointing gamepad at it like a tv remote

Leave the TV on you won't be able to turn the TV with IR from that far.
