Do you still have a disc in it?

Maybe you received some kind of friend request, system message, or some such thing? That's what it means on the Wii when its disc drive slot suddenly lights up blue.

The top light indicates whether or not a disc is in the system, to prevent you from accidentally inserting 2 at one time. If this is the light that is blue, even if the system's off, then you're fine.

(edited)
The Wii can receive messages when it is off, because it still remains connected to the internet. I would bet the WiiU can also.

EDIT: On the other hand, if it just means there's a disc in the drive, then ignore my suggestion.

My Macbook makes weird noises when I move it with a disc inside.
My disc light comes on on the Wii U too, even if it's off.
Maybe moving it while a disc is in it can cause damage so they want to warn you that there's a disk in there?
Just a hunch.
