Wii U sells only 400000 units during Thanksgiving week? Flop?

#31advocacyPosted 11/27/2012 5:42:30 AM
The question you should be asking yourselves is why the Wii sold much better than the Wii U during its own launch period.

Perhaps gamers were turned off by the high price, and would prefer to buy it later after a price cut and when better games appear. Or perhaps they are just saving their money for the impending release of the Xbox 720 or the PlayStation 4.

Regardless, this simply means that Nintendo had better come up with better games for this system fast before their rivals release their respective next-generation systems.

If the Wii U is a flop, then the 360 was a catastrophe and the PS3 was the worst thing to happen to humanity.

Wii - 600,000 first week
Wii U - 400,000 first week
Xbox 360 - 326,000 first TWO weeks
PS3 - 197,000 first TWO weeks

To be fair, Xbox 360 only sold that many because that's all they had to sell, as in. None stayed on the shelf, basically they sold almost instantly as they were entered into inventory from the shipping truck. That went on for awhile, I believe they only was able to ship 75,000 a week.

http://money.cnn.com/2005/10/07/commentary/game_over/column_gaming/index.htm

Cooper's prediction is more dire, saying there will only be between 300,000 and 350,000 units available in the U.S. on Nov. 22, when the system launches. (Cooper, in a note, said he expects two shipments from Microsoft (Research) this year one before launch and another in December.)

One 360 went for 5,000 on Ebay.

So claiming the Wii U outsold the 360 is irrelevant considering the 360 sold every system it shipped for over 3 months after launch almost instantly. You can't sell something you don't have.

...Same could be said with Wii U.

but the point is that Wii U isn't doing worse than PS3/Xbox 360 currently.

Never claimed that, just saying it's not a legit comparison. Nintendo is shipping out consoles daily, Microsoft on the other hand did not ship any more out until the next month. It's hard to speculate how many they would have sold but around 1.5 million units was constantly grabbed up normally the day the shipment came in, so the demand was quite high just no systems to sell. Big fail on Microsoft's part but technically the Wii, etc sold more the first week but Xbox had lower numbers because it sold every single system it had day one and had no more until the next month.

Yeah but you expect Sony and MS products to sell low but not Nintendo.

I can't even think of an insult grand enough to convey the magnitude of this stupidity. This is truly the dumbest post I've seen in the decade I've been coming to GameFAQs. You have put me at an absolute loss for words.

The price tag of PS3 was high. If it was the same as Wii U's, it would have sold much more.

If it was the same as Wii U's, Sony would be shuttered by now. You really think they'd have been able to afford a $500 per-unit loss on every console? They couldn't even afford the $200 loss per unit they already took!

not an accurate comparison because people actually wanted PS3 and 360 but there was not enough supply. I couldn't find a 360 for 4 MONTHS after release.

The first week of the 360's launch, 40,000 XBox 360's were on eBay.

I'd say it's a flop because there are still consoles on the shelves right now. Wii U isn't technically "sold out."
