I think my WiiU froze during the background update.

the game may show a frozen game but that doesn't mean processes aren't happening in the background. So allowing it 20 minutes to finish what it was doing and possibly preventing your brick is absolutely not counter intuitive.
It can save you a big headache.

The firmware is downloaded in the background, but I'm pretty sure you have to initiate the update. While it's updating, you can't go to the home menu... so you weren't playing NSMBU while it was performing the update.

Yep, that's right. You can download the update in the background but to install it you have to quit whatever game you are playing and you can't do anything else with the Wii U while it installs.

So TC your problem is some other issue. Who knows, launch console and all you may have suffered a hardware malfunction.
