I was thinking about getting the 8GB Wii U at some point since I dont really care much for what the 32GB version additionally offers. But as I read about the initial Wii U update I grew concerned about the 8GB version. Most likely there will be more updates along the way. I believe there will be a point where the 8GB version cannot handle anymore firmware updates because of space limitation. This is something that an external hdd cannot fix since it is firmware. Is this a valid concern? I am disappointed that Nintendo decided to go with such small storage space. Even when the PS3 came out, 20GB was the smallest you could get.

how much space has been used by all of the updates so far?

I believe that new firmware updates would rewrite old updates.

I've read 5GB. Another update like that would make the 8GB version obsolete.

No, as has been stated firmware overwrites the old.

Well hopefully there will never be an update larger than 8GB (which doesnt seem impossible). I guess I might just wait for the next iteration of Wii Us ... hopefully with more storage and a price drop.

How much of that 8gb is usable? How much is lost due to formatting?

can anyone confirm or deny if the firmware updates take up more space on the hard drive? not a "i think so" someone that has actually done the latest update, how much space left after the update on a basic model?

The firmware would replace the old firmware.

the point is moot.
