does anyone use an external hard drive with their wii u?

I have an external hard drive I was using as a back up for my PC, and originally used to back up my older PC's data to move to this one.

I'm not actually using it at the moment, but it's not a very big hard drive. I am not sure if it would work with my Wii U, either.

Yes -- you can use a single cable USB external hard drive with the Wii U (one without an external AC adapter), as I have been using this one since day one:

WD My Passport 1TB Portable External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0 Black

WD is Western Digital. You can buy it on Amazon. The single USB cable that comes packaged with the unit powers it from the Wii U, and I can see the saves on the USB drive, for games such as Mario, Nintendoland, Zombie U, etc.

This might work better because it is brand new, and USB 3.0, but it does work great, and I highly recommend it.

Based on what everyone on here is saying, I guess I lucked up, because I bought this before the Wii U came out, with the intent of using it with the Wii U.

By the way, I am NOT using a Y-cable, as that may have not been clear from the previous post. I hope this helps anyone looking for this solution.

Yeah you need a y-cable if you don't have a power source, it works fine once you get the cable though, and they're only like $5.

What?

You don't need that. Just plug it in and go.

if you've got a hard drive with no power source and one usb plug working then you have one of a tiny select few that work on a single usb. Most hard drives can't get enough power from one port to do read/write operations.

What year did you come from!?

I've been using a single USB port external HDD for 3 years now.

Do you happen to have a really old HDD?

I got one new from Best Buy a couple days before the WIi U launched. Doesn't plug into the wall, and doesn't use a Y-cable.

Doesn't work.

Obviously it depends on the hard drive.

Some external hard drive brands work with one cable, others don't.

Games can be run from the hard drive, otherwise the eShop wouldn't have "Wii U Basic Set owners must have an external hard drive to download this software" mentioned on several games, since there ain't much you can fit in the 3GB you get from that version.
