To play Wii-U games? You can't use the Wii classic controller for Wii-U games.

when gamecube games are downloadable you will need it to play them

No the CCP is useable for the some Wii U games. I think COD can use it as well some others

Yes you can. Wii U games support the classic controler if they so choose. Sonic All Star Racing supports it and the pro controller. Ninja Gaiden supports the Pro Controller only.

It depends on the game.

That's pretty much it. Nintendo only produced the controller to satisfy hardcore game developers by making a controller the same as the PS3 and 360. (Although, no analog trigger.)
