Is The Wii U Starved For Games In Q1?

Now the Wii U has been launched and weíve all enjoyed the awesome multiplayer in Nintendo Land and the platforming bliss of New Super Mario Bros U, itís time to look to the future. Next quarter to be specific. While itís no secret that the Nintendo 3DS blundered things when it came to offering truly worthwhile software in itís first six or so months of release, after hearing Nintendo claim theyíd learned their lesson and wouldnít be making the same mistake again with the Wii U it comes as a little surprising to see the consoleís line-up for January through March.

Letís kick off with January. SiNG PARTY and Marvel Avengers. Starting the new year with what is essentially a karaoke game with pointless Wii U integration and a so-so fighter are not going to bring in the crowd.

Things look slightly better for February starting with Scribblenauts Unlimited on the 8th and NBA 2K13 the week after. However the big (and perhaps most anticipated launch) comes in the form of Rayman Legends rounding off the month. Letís just say if it werenít for Rayman, February would be a fairly forgettable month too.

March again looks okayÖ I guess, with Monster Hunter and LEGO City leading the charge. However bear in mind Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is merely a HD upgrade to a nearly three year old game and LEGO City may fail to live up to expectations. Game & Wario is also expected some time in the early year but do we need ANOTHER mini-game collection? Perhaps Iím just being negative and who knows, LEGO and Wario may in fact be a fantastic games, itís just hard to get too excited when weíve seen very little on either so far. Aliens Colonial Marines and Need for Speed are decent additions in terms of third party support too but again whereís the rest?

Meanwhile Xbox 360, PC and PS3 are getting the likes of Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, a new Gears of War, a new God of War, DMC, Crysis 3, a new Metal Gear plus plenty more. If Nintendo arenít securing big titles like these it needs to back up what appears to be a severely lacking line-up with titles of their own. The fact Pikmin 3 isnít making it till Q2 doesnít help matters either.

It seems others share a similar opinion of gaming forums with comments ranging from ďNintendo got me good!Ē to ďIf Iíd have known this was the line-up, Iíd have held off getting the console.Ē Harsh but itís not tough to see where theyíre coming from.

Iím a big Nintendo fan and itís disappointing that itís getting to the point where I have to write something like this to get my point across. Iím excited for Rayman and will likely give Aliens and Scribblenauts a go, but thatís about as far as it goes. To put things in perspective, Iíll likely be picking up around ten titles on my Xbox 360. Sure the Wii U has just launched so perhaps itís expected that the line-up isnít as en Itís hard to see what ďlessonsĒ Nintendo have learned from their 3DS launch looking at this release list, and hopefully their hiding a few surprises to change my mind.

Do I regret buying a Wii U? No, itís great fun and I expect plenty of good things from it in the future. Maybe I just expected too much, too soon from the company. What do you guys think? Is this an okay line-up?

Q1 is looking really dry for the Wii U. Hopefully some surprises pop up and make the first quarter a little better.

The system did just launch so there will always be a dry start.

I am happy with the games I have now. 3 games purchased in one day will last me quite a while.

That is true, but that should not be affecting it so early in its lifetime.

I couldn't imagine being the gamer I am, and this being my ONLY console.

As a local multiplayer machine (with occasional forays into single-playerdom), this thing rules... but as my only gaming system? Meh... wouldn't work for me.

That being said though, even with game starvation, it gets plenty of attention at our place.

And just like that, that website just lost all its creditability.

It's funny that currently this console is like a poor mans ps3/360 and all of these former wii only gamers are loving it. These are the same people who think the PS3/360 are trash yet the love their Wii U.

Crazy world.

Those people are really die hard, almost all groups have those people but the Wii U isn't a poor mans 360 or PS3 as it has potential to innovate games, almost like the Wii U except much better.
