Is the title killing it?

Honestly, Nintendo could have named it anything, and it probably wouldn't have changed a thing.

True, there will still be haters either way, but at least the name itself wouldn't have been subject to the ridicule it's getting now.

Unless you call Mega Man "Rockman" kindly quit whining about those of us who still say "Robotnik." Thank you.

I think another reason why people are so confused on whether or not it's a new console and not an add-on or anything is that the console itself looks so similar to its predecessor.

Think about it. When we moved from the NES to the SNES, there was a physical difference between the two consoles (for instance, the cart slot was placed on the top and not on the front, the controller was different, and the consoles themselves looked different). The same can be said with the SNES to N64, the N64 to Gamecube, and the Gamecube to the Wii.

This reasoning doesn't only affect Nintendo, but Sony and Microsoft as well. When Sony introduced the PS2, the consumers noticed that it looked different than the PS1. The placement of the disc tray was moved from the top to the front and it slid out as opposed to just having the lid open. Then when the PS3 was revealed, once again the consumers noticed that it was different from its predecessor.

But the problem between the Wii and the Wii U is that they look so similar to each other. Nintendo didn't try to make the Wii U look any different from the Wii. If you place the Wii on its side and not use the vertical stand, it looks almost exactly like the Wii U. And the fact that more than one other person has to use Wii Remotes as opposed to Nintendo creating an entirely new controller for everyone to use doesn't help much either.

tl;dr, there's more to new consoles than just the names given to them. Physical differences between consoles from different generations help too.

A fair point. ^ The Wii and Wii U don't look exactly alike, but there's nothing obviously different about its shape and design.

It didnt stop the apple 4s phone either

The difference here is that it's a cell phone. Practically everyone has one, and a huge chunk of those people own an apple brand phone. They're more practical than a gaming device AND they can play games. (That's another thing that's killing this generation of games.)

Doesn't seem to be hurting the 3DS much. Either that or people have grown to expect annual releases of that.

Actually it WAS hurting the 3DS. To this day there are still parents and adults who see the handheld, see that the system itself along with the game cartridges and boxes are nearly identical, see a naming scheme similar to the DS/DSlite/DSi/DSiXL, and pass it off as another reiteration of the DS. I believe Nintendo themselves even addressed this issue with both the 3DS and the Wii U.

Yes, I would say the name is killing the Wii U...

It will end up affecting sales. A lot. Unless Nintendo makes a commercial saying "Herou, everywan. Mah neeim is Satoru Iwata-san, and I wourd rike to present da newest Nintendo console: Wii U. It's not a Wii, it's a SUPER WII!!

Yes. I'm sorry, but it's too much linked to it's casual gamer brother-system the Wii. If no one's does research they're going to assume it's the same piece of crap the Wii was.

Had a conversation the other day that went exactly like this:

Guy: So Nintendo missed their chance to have a new system for Christmas, huh?

Me: Actually, they released a new console a few weeks ago.

Guy: Oh, really?

Me: It's called the Wii U, it has a tablet controller.

Guy: Ah.

This guy is pretty smart but he's not a serious gamer. To him the Wii is just a machine that lets you play golf in the house. If any Wii game doesn't have "Sports" or "Tiger Woods" in the title, he's never played it.

Nintendo sold a lot of product to guys like him. I don't know how they or any other console manufacturer can reach that audience now. They're perfectly happy with the living room games they already possess and are only buying new software for their phones.
