I was very very impressed by the scenery that was not pre rendered and the swaying plant life. It was also the last good final fantasy square made before they went bankrupt and merged with eenix and became a disgrace.

Multiplayer with boats, tanks, jeeps, 4 wheelers, player controlled air support, and the introduction of Rush game mode. Also a destruction system that gives grenades, GL's, C4, and rockets more of a purpose than in any other multiplayer shooter that I had ever played before. Add bullet drop and great overall solid physics to the mix. Also the stellar sound design.
