I'm using component cables to hook up to an older lcd tv. I'm pretty sure it supports more than 480i but the wii u won't let me change resolution. It says my cables don't support more than 480i despite the fact i'm using component cables. The cables are generic. Is this a cable problem?

I'd say its a problem with you not knowing if you have an HDTV or not.

It may be your TV. I have an old HDTV that only has a couple modes. 480i, 480p and 1080i. No other modes higher than those listed.

TV specs

Samsung LTM1775W
1 rear-panel component video (DVD 480i/480p)
1 rear-panel wide-bandwidth component video
(compatible with 1080i/720p/480p signals)
HDTV monitor (compatible with HDTV/SDTV formats when connected to a separate HDTV tuner and displays them at 768p)
1280 x 768 pixels
I read it is compatible with 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals

I don't have the yellow cable plugged in. Just green (Y), blue (Pb), red (Pr) + audio. The display is black and white.

Purchased in 2002, just need it for a couple of weeks, but still, would be nice to get it to work.

Perhaps you have the component video red and audio red switched?
