When Nintendo starts treating the series with respect, instead of handing it off to other developers, it'll be amazing.
Star Fox on the SNES and Star Fox 64 are both amazing titles. Star Fox Adventures is not a Star Fox game, and if it is, it's as close to a Star Fox game as Super Mario Bros. 2 is a Mario game(USA version).
The only company I'd say Nintendo COULD hand it off to would be Retro Studios, as they've more than proven themselves with Nintendo IPs with Metroid Prime series and Donkey Kong Country Returns.
It's all in Nintendo's hands. Star Fox Assault was alright, but the unconventional controls for on foot missions was awkward for the title, and the little amount of Arwing only rail shooter levels gave us a taste of a great game, but I did like the title for trying to push the envelope and attempting to evolve the formula.
It's dead. We keep asking for one, but they keep releasing a game that is too far from the original flight combat game we grew up with. The last new starfox game was on the gamecube. The most recent starfox was a port.
While we're at it, F-Zero is dead too.

The last new Star Fox game was on the DS. I'm not talking about the 3DS remake.
It's just that the concept of Star Fox isn't appealing to much apart from the fans of the series.
The last time it sold well was on the 64, and that was because it had the idea of the Rumble Pack behind it.
Amazing, if it is executed correctly
It's dead to me at the moment because of SF64 3D's poorly handled multiplayer mode (should have had online multiplayer, where the player "webcams" would have made practical sense). Even the ****ty Star Fox Command on the DS had online multiplayer.
I said the series is dead, but only if Nintendo keeps ****ing it up. If they do it right and add online multiplayer and make a single player story mode that is in par or better than Star Fox 64, then it would be a great game.

single player of starfox 64 and online multiplayer of star fox assault with updated graphics and it will sell.

theyve never surpassed Starfox 64 in my opinion, so other than adding multiplyer or redoing the super nes one with improved graphics, I couldnt be interested

I personally loved SF:A and would love to see a sequel. Going back and playing ST64, it felt too linear, too confined, and too little replayability. However, if they could meld to two together, and make the flying missions non-linear ( i.e. not on rails) with tons of sidequests and collectibles, I think it would revitalize the franchise.
Or maybe some RPG elements
Hello Misinformed Zombie Fodder!
Personally, I don't like a flight simulator on rails. If you're going to give me the controls of a starfighter, I'd appreciate a sphere to play in.
That said, I enjoyed some aspects of SF:A, but I got tired of using that stupid staff. Give me a blaster.
So, I think having a game that incorporates those elements together would be a blast to play. For instance, you could have a level where you have to assault a space station with your fighter. Once it's fighters and defenses are down, you dock to it and explore the inside of the facility, taking down guards and solving puzzles.
Maybe it's because I grew up with some awesome TIE Fighter and X-Wing games, but rails are lame. Give me room to fly and I'm happy!
