If Nintendo made a USB charger for the Wii U Gamepad then it would have to have a driver that PCs would be able to recognize otherwise it might cause a heap of trouble for the PC (coming from experience).
Wrong. Simply using a USB port for power-only makes any driver, OS, or software completely irrelevant. If the device doesn't need to interact with the OS then it doesn't have to. Ever plug in a USB fan, or anything of the sort?
The problem is largely due to the fact that a USB 2.0 point isn't going to provide enough power to really charge that gamepad. That's why they use a wall charger.
Random tip of the day: Just because something doesn't happen to
you doesn't mean it can't happen.
The problems start to happen when something is plugged into a USB port and
is recognized by the OS but isn't meant to be used by it (look up the old years of Dualshock 3 support for PC for more info). Something like a USB fan that doesn't have drivers =/= something that has a driver that the OS doesn't understand. Show me how to plug in a USB device and have it
not try to install drivers for it by default and then we'll get somewhere. ;)
