Is Wii U A Gimmick and Not For True Gamers?

jubrany posted... 1shadetail1 posted...jubrany posted...Features and gimmicks are two different things. That is reasonable enough, but when a company brags about a feature, that pretty much turns it into a gimmick. After all, the whole point of bragging about something is to draw attention to it. Well, way back in the day, Sega spent a lot of time bragging about "blast processing" in the Genesis. And not too long ago, Sony and Microsoft certainly spent a lot of time bragging about their consoles' power and HD output (ditto Sony about bluray playback). So sometimes, improved hardware most certainly does qualify as a gimmick. --- Religion is like spaghetti: either stiff and fragile, or wet and limp.
I have been playing games since the 1980s, enjoyed Nintendo quite a bit, until the Nintendo 64 and my disappointment with that system. I wasn't entirely thrilled with their old practices and plus, Mario 64 looked less than what I thought it should. Basically, I would learn about how not to judge a console based on launch titles, but it would still take many years before I played a Nintendo system again. I went to Sony and enjoyed myself, until I began to realize how disappointed I have been with the PS3. I went back to Nintendo for the handhelds, back with the GBA, but I was highly skeptical about the Wii (so did the creators actually have worries about the Wii-mote). Plus, even though, I was disappointed with the lack of titles (I liked) but there was plenty that other people enjoyed (just not enough people buying games) and plus, I disagreed with their statement about too many titans. I, on the other hand, actually liked the wii-mote, though, sometimes I found it to be a pain to use in certain games. When I learned about the Wii-U, (I laughed at the name), but I was looking forward to it as I feel that this is a return of the Nintendo I knew back in the 1980s. I am glad that they have challenging games without it the controller/game play being the issue of why it is so hard. That's why the NES games were so hard, like Castlevania and those horrible staircases if you didn't go up the right way, you died. (>.<) I imagine all sorts of games from Shadowgate sort of games, Uninvited, Deja Vu (point and click games) being done with the tablet only with really awesome graphics and powerful, emotional music. Of course, I am a story and game lover so it's no surprise that I really inspired by this tablet like controller (I say like, because it's not really a tablet as you can't use it separately without the system). I can not wait to turn on the Wii-U for the first time and play some of those awesome games to come. You have to remember that Nintendo are developers and don't create things needlessly like some other companies. So the end result has to be fun and the ability of creating good games. I can not say that Nintendo is always been successful, but unless you take risks, you don't grow. You don't make mistakes, you can't see what you are capable of. People say that Nintendo isn't innovative... Well, they are innovative enough for Sony and Microsoft to copy, but at least, Microsoft is doing it a way that's a lot more original than Sony is doing it. Sony is just outright copying Nintendo. (-_-) And, while I have been angry at Nintendo, I've discovered that they had some awesome games I missed out on that I would have played. Now, I am willing to own all three systems, even if I might not own a PS4 or whatever they call it. I wish I could program games, because suddenly I have a lot of ideas where I could see gaming going and no way of doing them. (^_^) I can only hope that OP is a troll, because then, otherwise, he would be so narrow-minded in his view that he is closed minded to the possibilities. Plus, this system is much better than even there old system as they listen to other developers this time around. I can not wait to get the Wii-U, OP, on the other hand, you need to stop with this TRUE GAMER and gimmick (I mean, gimmick is a business term), so yeah, we all have gimmicks. Unless you really believe that Pepsi is the drink of the young generation and Coke's the old people drink? --- Thanks to my dislike of Final Fantasy XIII, I looked back on ALL Final Fantasy games and now which one I like for what reason. Exilious posted... It is available for all iOS devices, actually I stand corrected on that point. The rest of my post still stands; comparing Smartglass to the Gamepad isn't valid. They really aren't the same thing. --- Religion is like spaghetti: either stiff and fragile, or wet and limp.
When the lightbulb was invented, it was passed off as a gimmicky, overpriced light source. Why invest in the technology of radiating light from an electrical coil when you could use a perfectly working candle? However, it caught on and became the norm. Just because something is a gimmick does not mean it's bad. If enough people buy into a gimmick and enjoy using it then it's a successful product. As for the "true gamers" argument, if you buy games and enjoy them as games, then you are a true gamer. Now, because this talk is about the Wii U, I will mention my experiences with it. It's a mess. It really is. The system has a long way to go, but it has plenty of time to get there. Right now, there are few good games, the menus are incredibly slow, and many just see it as an upgraded Wii. It has potential. Oh, and the controller is rather comfortable to hold. Now for something random: while Nintendo Land is just a mini-game collection, I absolutely love how simple it is to swap positions with others. Rock Band, you should learn from this, none of that "drop both players out and re-add them on the other instrument" stuff. --- Am I a cat, or am I a Zoroark? 1shadetail1 posted... jubrany posted...1shadetail1 posted...jubrany posted...Features and gimmicks are two different things. Gimmicks are things that don't really bring anything worthwhile to the table. They're just tack-on ideas that don't improve things. If you think that improved hardware performance is gimmicky, then by that logic we should have stopped buying new consoles after the PS2 (gameplay hasn't really improved, only the graphics... right???)... If you can't see that what you are arguing is illogical, then I guess you can't be helped.
TheBonfini posted... 1shadetail1 posted...jubrany posted...Features and gimmicks are two different things. Truth. More annoying buzzwords: Immersion (positive connotation of "myopic world view") Freedom (positive connotation of "irresponsibility") Choice (positive connotation of "control") Linear (negative connotation of "story") Open world (positive connotation of "simulator") Plothole (positive connotation of "im stupid") I always wanted to get that off my chest.
RomanBlade00 posted... From what I've seen from the console it basically sports graphics that are similar (often worse) to 360s and PS3s, so why is it so much more expensive? Is it the controller? The huge controller also looks really uncomfortable and from what I've read has a short battery life. comparing grapchis from launch games that don't take advantage of what the console offers... comparing to a 360/ps3 here let debate nes vs ps2 why don't we... Secondly More expensive its a new peice of hardware "looks" before your you even put your foot in your mouth more go to a gamestop or bestbuy and hold it. Its not uncomfortable and fact many people were surprise how "light it is" Oh god no a short battery life do you need to play 20+ hrs of gaming? plus its not like you can't charge and play at same time. Who are you?
I really don't see how multi-player in Mario Chase and Ghost Mansion could be done with standard controllers. The concept of players having information that others don't is very intriguing to me. I also like the verbal cooperation in the Nintendo land multi-player games. If they really flesh out the possibilities I think some pretty awesome things can be done. Card games (once 2nd tablet support is released), setting up the tablet-user as a GM, or more streamlined versions of things like 4swords/crystal chronicles. Whether they are able to tap into the potential is another question. I certainly hope they do. BTW, I am also aware that all my examples are meant for couch co-op. I feel pretty confident that the wiiu is much better in a social setting. And I think that is alright.

You could do it with multi-screen/multi-console LAN, like how the GameCube supported that with MarioKart, but it would be more costly and impractical.
RomanBlade00 posted... chimpmeister, thank you for the post. I was also baffled by the high price of the system and now I know that it's the controller that cranks up the price big time. This was Nintendo's chance to enter the HD world with something worthy after what they did with the Wii and they blew it. They should have just went back to a regular gamepad and price their system at a lower price point. PS3 Launch says hi, lmao. You do know that ALL controllers are gimmicks, right? I think you're missing that point badly. If this was Nintendo's chance to "enter the HD World with something worthy" they nailed it beautifully. Nintendo Land is gorgeous to the eye, and fun as well. I really do feel bad for you, though. If you were forced to pick and choose one post when everyone is saying that you probably should look before you talk trash about something. =/ --- Official President of the NST 'But Neku, I thought you couldn't afford to lose?
