I take it was because of the rise of the "hardcore", then?

No, people back in the SNES days were always interested in bigger and better games, better hardware. Why you think they listed the size of each game on the SNES, etc? Why you think they listed the actual specs of the consoles. Nintendo as an example went casualcore with their system, the other companies continued to do what was done back in the 90s and kept on going, Nintendo just changed, not the people and the diehard Nintendo fans live in a world where they think everyone else changed but really it's them who changed

To be fair, the bible has more plot holes than ME3. I wouldn't be listening either - Pies12

No, not back in the SNES days, I meant in the GameCube days.
Y'know? When kids started thinking rated M games were "cool"?

What does that have to do with the Gamecube? It had those games.

werent the final sales numbers make the Gamecube in the middle xbox last and ps2 first?

No, Gamecube was last

well looking up the numbers the gamecube was indeed last, but it was really close with the xbox in sales, the Xbox only won by like less than 3 million sales so it wasnt an outright decimation for the gamecube

2 contributing factors were the different disc format and the rise of Online gaming, which Nintendo tried to avoid.

Because it simply couldn't hold a candle to the PS2's MASSIVE game library, packed to the brim with great games for every genre. There really was no contest between which was the better console unless you were a huge sucker for first party Nintendo games.

This. The PS2 was an unstoppable monster that gen and every other home console suffered because of it. Even the GBA sold quite a bit less than Nintendo's other handhelds.

You were right the first time 6th gen was all about GTA and GameCube didn't have it. Nintendo gain permanent uncoolness from then on. It really was the beginning of "hardcore".

Before that FPS and Sports games were considered the causal games because jocks and non-gamers liked those the most.
